It is more important for Abu Mazen to prevent any semblance of normalization between any Muslim country and Israel than it is to protect the people in the PLO/PFLP-controlled areas of Israel.

HOWEVER

However, based on past experience with Abu Mazen and his friends, if they or their near kin get sick they will rush to an Israeli hospital — usually a private hospital in Tel Aviv — to make certain they get the treatment their subjects do not deserve — or are not allowed to access.

In a fit of pique, Abu Mazen et al closed the border. People in PLO/PFLP occupied areas of Israel are as locked IN as Israelis are locked out.

Gaza, under the twin thumbs of Hamas and the Palestine Islamic Brotherhood, is only slightly better. Perhaps was only slightly better. According to Al Arabiya’s English language site, some Hamas higher up apparently defected to Israel¹ or were clandestinely transferring intelligence to Israel, Gaza’s “leadership” has been arresting its own people on spying charges. (Cutting off supplies via Israel is not a problem; Egypt might be convinced to open its border with Gaza.)

As of Tuesday, the number of active or symptomatic cases in the PA stood at 6,372, while 1,317 patients have recovered. The death toll from coronavirus among the Palestinians stood at 45 as of Tuesday.

CAVEAT: This applies to only a few of the “super Jews” who live in places such as Jerusalem, Beni Brak, Williamsburg, Monsey, and a few other places.

These people are paying now by becoming infected through their stupidity.

(March 29, 2020 / JNS) The Israeli government is considering placing the ultra-Orthodox city of Bnei Brak under quarantine, Israeli Finance Ministry Director General Shai Babad told the country’s parliament on Sunday (29 MAY 2020).

With police reporting difficulty in enforcing lock-down directives in the city, which has an infection rate higher than the national average, Babad told the Knesset’s Special Committee on Dealing with the Coronavirus, “We are having more than a few problems with ultra-Orthodox society in areas like Bnei Brak.”

Babad made the comment hours after hundreds of Bnei Brak residents gathered for the burial of Rabbi Tzvi Shenkar, with thousands reportedly attending a funeral procession just before. Videos show hundreds gathering in close proximity to one another, breaking social distancing directives.

Several clashes between residents and police attempting to enforce the lock-down have taken place in ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods in recent weeks.

Last week, Israeli Health Ministry data showed that 24 percent of infections have occurred in synagogues, with the next most common places of infection being hotels (15 percent), restaurants (12 percent), supermarkets (seven percent) yeshivas (five percent) and medical clinics (five percent). Educational institutions, old age homes, day cares, mikvehs, election ballot stations, shopping malls, event halls and gyms all fell under five percent.

According to internal Health Ministry data published in Haaretz, infections in Bnei Brak are increasing eight-fold every three days, compared to the two-fold national average. In Jerusalem, which also has a high ultra-Orthodox population, the cases are quadrupling in the same time period.

The Knesset discussion of a potential full lock-down, said Babad, is centered on “how we could put a closure in place and isolate those areas,” referring to the ultra-Orthodox areas with high infection rates and non-compliance with government orders intended to decrease spread of the outbreak.

In the Ashkenazi “ultra-Orthodox” community many feel they are entitled to do whatever they will; just like the young nazis who feel that they cannot be infected and die, and if a few old folks die, so what. “They were old anyway.”

There are a few in the Sefardic community in Israel and in the U.S. who, despite being “senior citizens” with underlying conditions disregard governments’ “Stay Home” rules. In two cases, the men have equally elderly wives at home who also have underlying health conditions.

Stupid. Yes.

Self-centered? Yes.

Placing themselves unnecessarily at risk? Yes.

The young people I can understand. They simply don’t care about anyone but themselves. They board planes for Florida, breathe infected air for two-plus hours, get off the plane and then are told to “self-isolate” for 14 days.

If the governor (of Florida) believes they will do that, he’s a bigger fool than we thought.

 

Almost no observant Jew wants to give up his minyan. He may manage to make minyans only on Shabat, but making those minyans is a special part of his life.

But

     * The rabbis have told us to pray at home.

     * The governments have told us to stay home.

WHY would anyone “make minyan” when their life, and the lives of others, is in jeopardy? Only a fool or a person who is “entitled.”

 

And this, too, shall pass.

Hopefully, a preventative soon will be found and equally soon a cure will be found, and the Chinese Virus of 2020 will be something our grandchildren will tell their grandchildren.

 

Meanwhile we have to suffer not only the Chinese virus but the entitled youth and stupid “ultra-Orthodox” and others who refuse to believe they cannot be infected.

Opuscula Chinese virus Does what HaShem can’t

DUE TO THE CHINESE VIRUS and governments from federal to state to municipality, most Jews stayed home for Shabat.

OK, they may have watched tv, BBQed, and smoked whatever throughout the day, but they stayed home.

Everyone knows becoming shomer Shabat (Shabat observant) is a very steep curve and should be done little by little, one mitzvah now, another next Shabat, and so on.

 

ANYWAY, since all synagogues and most minyans were closed for the duration, most of us said our Shabat prayers at home.

As one wag put it, on Friday night he’ll pray in the living room; on Shabat morning he will pray in the dining room for a better kiddish. (Wish I had thought of that.)

This Shabat was a  L O N G  Shabat: double portion PLUS a third portion from a second sefer, and a special haftarah to coincide with the announcement of the New Moon (Rosh Hodesh Nissan/Aviv).

All of which was followed by THE ANNOUNCEMENT.

In normal times, someone reads the announcement prayer and, I confess, I really don’t pay attention.

But today I had to read it myself.

Wow!

If what I read is correct, the Chinese virus will be history by the first of Nissan and Pesach can proceed as usual.

In the Sefardi announcement prayer (below), we are asking HaShem to לעצר המגפה — to halt (לעצר) the epidemic/pandemic (המגפה).

I have several Sefardi sedurim and they all read just about the same.

 

 

And then . . .

And then I opened up a couple of non-Sefardi sedurim: Chabad and Artscroll.

I borrowed the Chabad sedur since, unlike my Sefardi sedurim, it has an English translation. Likewise the Artscroll.

What I found was a totally different.

The Artscroll mevorchim (announcement of the new moon) asks for many things, but halting the Chinese virus is not one of them. Artscroll’s prayer follows:

 

 

Most Ashkenazi and Chabad sedurim are similar; not identical, but similar.

 

Bottom line or קו תחתון

Checking all the sedurim on my shelves brought me to the sad realization that not every הכרזת ראש חודש or mevorchim is the same. Sometimes, it seems, not even close.

Maybe the Ashkenazi contingent can “borrow” the Sefardi prayer if not now, then maybe for next month — unless, of course, that בע"ה the Chinese virus is just a bad memory because a prophylactic and cure is found, produced, and universally administered.
