Opuscula Euro-Jews depend On Angels to defend Them in New York

RED BERETS AND RED JACKETS WITH “Guardian Angels” stenciled on them once again patrol neighborhoods where hasidic Jews reside.

According to the arch Angel, Curtis Sliwa, the Guardian Angels were invited into the several hasidic communities by the community leaders.¹

The question is WHY?

THE OBVIOUS ANSWER is because hasidic Jews are easy targets. Unlike “modern Orthodox” and non-observant Jews who either hide their peyot and tzit-tzit or have abandoned them altogether, the hasidim are easy to identify as Jews.

One less obvious answer is that attacks on hasidic Jews cause the politicians to get on their soap boxes to offer quotable words for the NY Times and local tv.

But the REAL reason the Guardian Angels were invited back is a reason the hasidic Jews should be embarrassed to admit:

They refuse to defend themselves

Jews used to defend themselves.

We just finished recalling the feats of the Maccabees. The hanukiot are barely put away.

The Jews of the Warsaw ghetto defended themselves and embarrassed the nazis before the world (that still ignored the Jews’ plight).

The Jews — EURO-JEWS — that followed Jabotinsky, the ones who populated LIHI and defended themselves.

Jews served in the militaries of the U.S. and its allies during World War 2.

This scrivener personally knows an Ashkenazi Orthodox rabbi who served in Viet Nam with the 101^st Airborne Screaming Eagles.

The IDF, a mixed bag to Ashkenazi, Sefardi, and Mizrachi Jews repeatedly defended not only themselves but all of Israel from invading Arab armies.

Jewish self-defense is nothing new.

Granted, we did not win EVERY battle, but we DID defend ourselves.

One of the best known unarmed fighting techniques, one that is taught in police academies throughout the Western world, is an Israeli “invention”: Krav Maga.

Israel also produces a variety of weapons, mostly for the military, but some that can be used by civilians when local governments allow non-criminals to have weapons.

But the hasidic Jews of New York, despite being politically conservative, won’t defend themselves.

Basic, anyone can do it, measures such as walking in groups, the larger the better.

Carrying bats or boards; surely these hasidic neighborhoods have an eruv.

Their young hasids don’t take Krav Maga classes.

Their women know little about self-protection.

Let the police or Guardian Angels protect us.

The police are too few and too far between to patrol every street of every hasidic neighborhood. Even in “less dangerous” neighborhoods; that is, non-hasidic neighborhoods, expecting instant police presence is foolish.

MEANWHILE, there are those that claim Sliwa is as bad as the people who attack Jews. The Yeshiva World web site includes an op-ed audio of what it considers Sliwa attacks on the hasidic community.

Interestingly, most of the comments favor Sliwa and take Yeshiva World’s op-ed writer to task.²

The stupidity of failing to learn self-defense measures is not limited to hasidim.

Leftist Jews also are happy to let someone else defend them.

It seems the only Jews who are prepared to defend themselves are Israeli ex-pats, and even some of them are unprepared.

Fortunately, not all communities have strict gun controls — read "where only criminals have guns." We DO need strict gun laws, starting with background checks, a requirement to practice with the weapon, and education to know when, and when not, to shoot.

Those people who attack Jews are bullies. The only way to deal with a bully is to meet the bully on his (or her) terms. It may not be politically correct, but force may be the only thing the bully understands. Once we have the bully’s attention, THEN the psycho-babble people can try to re-educate the bully.

When I was growing up in Miami, I quickly learned that if someone pushed me, I needed to push back — harder. That usually ended the confrontation.

Anti-Semitism again hits Argentina. A man broke into a synagogue during Shabbat evening services on Friday night and threatened worshipers in in Buenos Aires.

During the attack, the assailant threatened the worshipers with a sharp object and threw stones at the congregants and a security guard. He also threw oil on the floor, causing several worshipers fell on the synagogue's entrance floor. One of the guards prevented further violence by pepper spraying the attacker. QUESTION: Were all the worshipers elderly or handicapped that they couldn’t overwhelm a single attacker?

Granted, there was a “security guard” — was he also elderly or handicapped? — he obviously was unable to act quickly enough to protect his charges.

Jews throughout the world MUST THROW OFF THEIR EUROPEAN HEAD-IN-THE-SAND MENTALITY.

Until they do, they will continue to suffer attacks — some resulting in injury or death.

Congregations need to

*   Carefully examine the areas in which people congregate
  *  The minyan area
  *  The kitchen
  *  Offices
to determine what “weapons” are available,weapons such as
  *  Chairs
  *  Standers
  *  Books
  *  Ornaments
  *  Fire extinguishers

that can be thrown at attackers, if only to distract the attackers.

*   Make certain all doors have “one-way” locks — locks such as push bars that allow people inside to escape, but are locked to people on the outside; fire safety must not be overlooked.

*   Have an alarm system that alerts personnel both inside the building and outside that there is an intruder

*   Have the local police number on speed dial

*   Encourage the younger members to learn self-defense measures.

Jews must stop being easy prey for anti-Semites and Israel haters.

WE WERE NOT ALWAYS THIS WAY

Jews have been warriors since at least Abraham’s day (when he took troops to rescue his cousin Lot).

Every Jew knows, or should know, about the Maccabees. Likewise all (should) know the history of the struggles for modern Israel — Lehi, Irgun, Palmach, Jabotinsky.

While I am not proposing that every able-bodied Jew (man and woman) learn krav maga¹ (this can be a painful learning experience) or that the elderly and handicapped carry concealed weapons (although I am not against this if the person carrying the weapon is trained to use it safely), nor am I suggesting that congregations dismiss professional security personnel (although I DO recommend that they thoroughly check each individual guard’s qualifications, I AM suggesting that we CAN do much to protect ourselves..

Some of the recommendations above, such as knowing the location of all exits and knowing the locations of all fire extinguishers are just good GENERAL advice. ! I once created a business continuity plan for Zim. When I asked personnel if they knew the location of the nearest two exits, most didn’t know. When I asked where was the nearest fire extinguisher, even a person sitting next to one could not tell me where there was a fire extinguisher ! The people were all Americans (although the Israelis were no better). These responses are typical.

Besides fighting fires (if the extinguisher user is trained), they also are handy weapons, both for spraying the chemicals in an attacker’s face and for throwing at an attacker. Aerosol cans containing any type material also may be used in the same way.

BOTTOM LINE

The “bottom line” for Jews is to be prepared to defend ourselves, regardless of location or time of day.

That requires knowledge of the environment (building), awareness of what is available for defense, and training to use whatever is at hand.

MOST anti-Semites, when outnumbered, are cowards. When we fight back, they will run. That’s good — we are safe — and bad — they are able to try again later; to look for less prepared victims.

Do not expect anyone other than yourself to defend you. There is too much Kitty Genovese mentality². That, coupled with the European Jews’ “head in the sand” mentality, means “don’t expect help from from anyone.”

You need not be a Charles Atlas³, Charles Bronson⁴, or Clint Eastwood, but you CAN be more than a victim IF you and your fellow Jews defend yourselves.

Hoping the crazies — for that is what anti-Semites are, crazy — will go away won’t make it happen.
